£10,000 Donation - Home and Away

To recognise the special fixture between the two oldest competing footballing nations, the Tartan Army Childrens Charity (TACC) has arranged for a unique cross-border donation to be made to Child Bereavement UK (CBUK).

Members of the Tartan Army Children’s Charity TACC visited Child Bereavement UK’s offices in Saunderton. Dressed in their kilts, the TACC members presented 2 cheques, each of £5,000 to Child Bereavement UK, a charity which supports families and educates professionals when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement.

Many of us have personal experience, and all of us know, that the death of someone close can leave children and young people feeling isolated as they struggle with very powerful and painful feelings that are not shared by many of their peers.

The TACC donation will support two specific initiatives.

Away Donation

The first donation to the Children and Young Persons Support CHYPS group will facilitate programmes that will enable children and young people betwen the ages of 5 and 12 to come together, with the support of specially trained family support workers and volunteers. These programme are currently focused in the Bucks and Milton Keynes areas.

Spending time with others their own age and understanding that they are not alone and unsupported can be an immediate benefit, and help minimise the longer term negative outcomes of bereavement  such as bullying, depression and anxiety and low self esteem leading to inappropriate relationships.

Bereavement Support Worker at Child Bereavement UK Pam Masini, who has been involved with the children’s support groups for the last 8 years, said:

“A major strength of the CHYPS groups is that each child realises they are not the only one where someone important in their lives has died. We hear time after time children saying: 'I thought I was the only one'...For those of us working with the children we never cease to be amazed and humbled by the power of the work they produce and the wise words they utter, helped by being in a safe emotional environment with others in a similar situation and with appropriate support from trained helpers.

I am over the moon about this funding as it means we can continue to provide this vital service to bereaved families in Buckinghamshire.”

Home Donation

The second donation will go towards CBUK holding two specific Family Days in Scotland, as the charity progresses to open their new centres in Scotland. The Scottish Govt. have already committed to provide funding to the charity to provide leadership and strategic support in working to develop networks and care pathways for child bereavement support in 4 of the most socially and economically deprived areas of Scotland. These are currently identified as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.  CBUK has been working for some time with grass-roots bereavement charities in Scotland, and experienced NHS bereavement experts, and has frequently been asked to deliver training and quality development projects here.

The donations to CBUK were made at their HQ in Saunderton, Bucks on Tuesday, Aug 13th 2013.
